James Drake

James Drake is an international artist who was born in Lubbock, Texas, lived in El Paso and graduated from the Art Center College of Design, in Los Angeles, California, with a Masters of Fine Arts. He currently lives and works in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

He has had over eighty one-person shows, including exhibitions at Site Santa Fe, Santa Fe, N.M., the Museum of Contemporary Art, Houston, Texas, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., and the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, La Jolla, CA.

He has been invited to participate in over one hundred group exhibitions including the 52nd International Art Exhibition, Venice Biennale, Venice, Italy, The Whitney Biennial 2000, New York, N.Y., and The National Museum of American Art, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C.

Over thirty-five Museums and Institutions have included his work in their permanent collections, including the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, N.Y., Brooklyn Museum of Art, Brooklyn, N.Y., Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington DC, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, TX, and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, N.Y.

In 2001 James Drake received a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship and a Nancy Graves Award for Visual Arts. In 1989 he received Awards in the Visual Arts Fellowship from the Southeast Center for Contemporary Art, and two National Endowment for the Arts Grants.

In the fall of 2008, The University of Texas Press published his first monograph. It surveys more than thirty-five years of his art, through the media of sculpture, video and drawing.
