The Texas Cultural Trust x Brandon Maxwell x The University of Texas Textiles and Apparel Scholarship funded by the Bennett Endowed Scholarship in Human Ecology
This scholarship is a one-year, merit, and need-based award for students pursuing higher education in fashion. Established in collaboration with the Brandon Maxwell fashion house, the scholarship seeks to provide high-quality educational opportunities. The Texas Cultural Trust and Brandon Maxwell are committed to diversifying the fashion industry.
The scholarship was first established in 2021 in partnership with The University of Texas at Austin College of Natural Sciences/School of Human Ecology Division of Textiles and Apparel and funded by the Gordon Clark Bennett Endowed Scholarship in Human Ecology. The recipients are awarded one (1) $10,000 scholarship to pursue fashion and receive mentorship as “Brandon Maxwell Scholars.” The inaugural 2021-2022 scholarship was awarded to incoming freshman Erika Escobedo. Her biography can be found below.
For the upcoming 2023-2024 school year, the scholarship is in a continued partnership with The University of Texas at Austin College of Natural Sciences/School of Human Ecology Division of Textiles Apparel and funded by the Gordon Clark Bennett Endowed Scholarship in Human Ecology. Scholarship applicants must be:
- Incoming first-year students admitted to the 2022-2023 UT Austin Textiles and Apparel Program;
- Financial Aid applicant;
- US citizens or permanent residents, and Texas residents; and
- Enrolled or planning to enroll in an undergraduate fashion degree program.
Students who have received the award in the past are ineligible to apply.

2022 Recipient Danai Munyaradzi
Congratulations to Danai Munyaradzi from McKinney, TX, the 2022 recipient of the Texas Cultural Trust x Brandon Maxwell x University of Texas Textiles and Apparel Scholarship. Danai has always had a love of fashion. Her love for fashion grew when she joined her high school’s fashion program in 2020. During her time in the program, she learned how to sew and created her own collection in the school’s first ever fashion show. She will be attending the University of Texas at Austin’s College of Natural Sciences Division of Textiles and Apparel starting in the fall of 2022. After university, she plans to become a fashion designer, with dreams of creating her own line. Danai also wants to become an advocate for diversifying the fashion industry and inspiring designers just like her.
2021 Recipient Erika Escobedo
Congratulations to the 2021 recipient of the Texas Cultural Trust x Brandon Maxwell x University of Texas Textiles and Apparel Scholarship: Erika Escobedo of Houston, TX. Erika developed an interest in fashion at a young age watching her grandmother, mother and aunts sew. Her love for fashion grew over the years as she watched fashion shows, collection exposés, and read reviews. Erika is interested in the intersection of textiles and science. She looks forward to studying the relationship between the two as they relate to the supply chain’s effects on the environment. Erika will be attending the University of Texas’s College of Natural Sciences Division of Textiles and Apparels starting in the fall of 2021.
